Reflective Parenting: Holding Parent and Child in Relationship    

Training Description: Parenting is about growing humans, ideally into well-minded, balanced, healthy, and happy individuals.  Many parents work tirelessly in supporting children in mind, body, spirit, and soul into reaching their fullest potential in life.  But why does parenting transform a well-intended, typically logical, and even-tempered adult into a screaming banshee?   As clinicians, we have many tools to respond to parenting support but too often, the patterns seem immovable and reoccurring.  Reflective Parenting offers a supportive parenting model based on Peter Fonagy’s concept of reflective functioning that allows for deep shifts to occur.  Integrating key concepts such as mentalization, attachment theory, mindfulness, intergenerational resiliency and trauma, Reflective Parenting holds the tension both the parent and child as individuals who have their own deep inner experiences and the dynamic between their intertwined worlds.  

Learning Objectives:
 
  • Discuss basic structure of Reflective Parenting Model
  • To introduce at least 3 key theoretical elements of the Reflective Parenting Model
  • Discuss specific clinical examples of how to integrate cultural/racial narratives in the intergenerational transmission of resilience and trauma

About the Presenter: Jennifer Chen Speckman, LCSW has practiced clinically with children and their families for over 18 years.  She has also run programs such as Early Head Start and served as the Director the Westside Domestic Violence Network (WDVN) for 10 years. Attachment concepts centering around the biological and emotional need for relationships inform all her work.  Her passion centers on creating healing interpersonal connections whether in strengthening communities, therapeutic individual, family, and couples treatment, and parenting support. She has served as faculty for MSW studies at universities such as UCLA, LMU, and USC.  She holds a private practice in Berkeley where she sees children, parents, couples, families, and individuals.

BAPTI maintains responsibility for this program and its content.  CPA Provider # BAY 012. The California Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS) now recognizes CPA continuing education credit for license renewal for LCSWs and MFTs.

To receive a CE credit you MUST sign and include your license number on both the Sign-In and Sign-Out Sheet. Participants must attend entire training to receive CE Credits. No partial credit will be provided.

Bay Area Psychotherapy Training Institute

We at bapti.org are a non-profit, public benefit corporation founded over 20 years ago to provide high quality therapy services to clients in local communities including Lafayette, Moraga, Orinda, Canyon, Concord and Walnut Creek.  BAPTI offers internships to qualified applicants who possess a master's degree or doctorate in Counseling Psychology or other appropriate major from an accredited university program.  BAPTI utilizes a private practice model that provides training and support for interns and guides them in developing, marketing and managing their own practices. BAPTI also offers a school-based program that supports interns in creating new alliances with schools and other agencies for specialized experiences. ​ We also support a group of independent licensed practice clinicians who realize the importance of establishing a professional community whose purpose is to support one another through continuing education, formal and informal consultations, and the sharing of our experiences in a variety of settings. We hold firmly that the private practice of therapy should not be an isolating experience and that clinical work is enhanced by frequent peer interactions.
